How to Do a Hot Oil Treatment

What is Hot Oil treatment for hair?

Hot oil treatments seal the hair cuticle and are made from plant-based oils including olive, almond, and coconut. These oils help to protect and strengthen your hair.

Before you use a hot oil treatment, be sure that it is appropriate for your hair type and that you understand the potential risks.  Consult your doctor or dermatologist first if you have sensitive skin or a skin condition like psoriasis or eczema to determine if a hot oil treatment on your scalp is safe.

Look for oils that are not mixed with synthetic components and are 100 percent natural to lessen the likelihood of an adverse reaction.

What are the benefits of Hot Oil treatment for hair?

Hot oil treatments are a popular choice for preserving and restoring dry, damaged hair. Hot oil treatments are also beneficial for:

  • stimulating blood flow
  • promoting hair growth
  • reducing dandruff
  • helping to prevent split ends
  • retaining moisture in hair
  • reducing frizziness
  • adding shine

Once a week – biweekly, apply a hot oil treatment to your hair. Alternatively, this treatment should be used every few days if your hair is extremely dry.

How to do a Hot Oil treatment?

Option 1 – Ready-made Hot Oil treatment

If you would rather use a ready-made hot oil treatment at home, there are several options to consider. Some come in heat-ready applicators, while others let you apply the exact quantity you need for your hair. Dr Miracle’s Daily Moisturising Gro Oil for example, is great for restoring damaged hair following relaxed, braided, natural or weaved hair.

Step 1:

Make sure hair is clean then mix conditioner with water in a spray bottle and spray mixture all over your hair and scalp until damp

Step 2:

Split hair into sections then apply GRO Oil from roots to end of hair

Step 3:

Massage GRO Oil into scalp

Step 4:

Cover hair with heating cap for 3 – 15 minutes

Step 5:

Shampoo with preferred conditioning shampoo

How to do a DIY Hot Oil treatment?

Option 2 –  DIY Hot Oil mixture

Before you begin, choose the type of oil you want to use. Popular oils include olive, almond, and jojoba oil, as well as coconut, avocado, sweet almond oil, shea butter (melted) and argan oil. Once you have chosen the oils you want to use, follow these steps for a DIY hot oil treatment.

Step 1:

First wash your hair then pour 2- 4 tablespoons of: 100% Peppermint oil, Almond oil, Black Castor oil and Olive oil or Coconut oil into a heat proof applicator bottle or bowl

Step 2:

Place the heat proof applicator bottle/ bowl in a larger heat-proof bowl of hot water for a few minutes, to heat the oil up until it is warm NOT hot

Step 3:

Section hair into four parts

Step 4:

On damp hair apply oil from roots to end of hair. Massage oil into scalp

Step 5:

Cover your hair with a shower cap and wait up to 20 minutes

Step 6:

Wash and rinse out hair with cool water then follow up with preferred leave -in conditioner

*Pro tip: after the last step, seal ends with LCO/LOC method (i.e Use Doo Gro Mega thick leave-In Gro Strengthener and Sunny isles Black Castor oil) *

Natural hair that is dry, brittle, or damaged will respond well to hot oil treatments. Hot Oil treatment will help to protect and hydrate your hair. A hot oil treatment will not repair irreversible chemical damage, but it will temporarily minimise the look of split ends, excessive frizziness, and dullness
